Interested in being a change agent in your city...Milwaukee?

Addressing Milwaukee Poverty In An Innovative, God-Honoring Way...One Person At a Time!

Interested in making a difference or change in the lives of people in your city...Milwaukee...or any city or town in the country?

What is Neighborhood Transformation?

Neighborhood Transformation is a strategy that helps churches minister in a wholistic manner to people in urban poor neighborhoods. It empowers people to take responsibility for their own lives. It helps neighbors to help their neighbors and moves them from welfare and relief to empowerment. It focuses on assets found in the neighborhood, which fosters local ownership instead of being based on problems that they expect outsiders to fix for them.

My prior blog post showed what non  profit organizations are already doing to reduce poverty in Milwaukee and you can join them.

But another option is to start right now...right where you are...and you don't have to wait for your church to get on board...you can start alone and or with a friend!

You may already be heavily involved in your own ministry and may not be able to take on a new ministry...but remember that Neighborhood Transformation is a template of hundreds of elements that a person does dependent on what they are already doing in a neighborhood.

Check out the links below to see what small elements you can add to your current ministry...and then see how combining God's word and His example of showing love to all people...and then helping them engage in this ministry can lead to the extension of God's Kingdom!  Talk about multiplication!

Search the list below and pick out your top 3 most fun activities you and another person can do together!

Programs for poverty alleviation are good...but "without heart change, money, healthcare, housing, and education do not meet our world's deepest needs." "Apart from Christ, we might simply introduce the problems of prosperity while we solve the problems of poverty. -  Peter Greer

"The church should be the most creative entity in the world."

By "Church" I mean the people of God, not the physical building or institution.

You as an individual can use your creativity to bring glory and honor to the   LORD!

Deirdre Mingo and her new vision

What I am doing now – Non-profit agency for Single Women without children
Eight (8) months ago another woman struggling with alcohol addiction came to the church and she is in need of housing, she has some income but struggles with living by herself. She needs a more controlled environment. My inspiration and burden for creating a homelike environment is even stronger than before. Now the Lord has made it possible for me to start a non-profit organization for housing hurting single women without children.  The organization name God gave me is ‘On Eagles Wings 4UL” Isaiah 40:31. I am the Director, President and Visionary of this non-profit organization. My husband is the Treasurer, my pastors wife is a board member. She worked in a supervisory capacity at Joy House and still volunteers there working with hurting women. My husband tells me they have to turn away single women without children on a regular basis and they are waiting to be able to refer them to our organization.

My vision is to have a homelike environment for single women without children where they can stay and be at ease that they have a bed/room (share a room- 2 women to a room) where they can grow and we identify what is hindering them from being self-sufficient and help them walk thru those issues thru counseling, and have them participate in Christian Based Programs to get them back on their feet again.

We wanted to have a home in the 15th alderman district not far from my church, but we are not sure if that is the home God has for us.  We are leaning towards identifying a home to rent that perhaps was a group home or facility that closed or a landlord that is willing to allow us to rent their home for this purpose. Either way we are in great need of identifying funding for these women to be able to pay for the living expenses of running a home and staff to assist them in their healing and growth.

If you or your organization are not able to assist us can you please direct me to a resource that could.

On Eagles Wings

Mission Statement

On Eagles Wings 4UL offers immediate, short term or transitional housing for hurting, needy single women without children.

Vision Statement:

There are many reasons a single woman may be in need of immediate, short term or transitional housing. Some of the reasons could be abuse (physical or mental), joblessness that leads to homelessness, drug or alcohol addictions or women in need of a safe haven from sex trafficking. There are not as many homelike shelters / facilities in the city of Milwaukee as we believe are needed for single women without children. “On Eagles Wings 4UL” exists is to help fulfill this need in our community.

At "On Eagles Wings 4UL", our vision is to provide a home where a woman can be encouraged and nurtured.  Our residents will receive a bedroom that she may or may not share with one other roommate if there is an overcrowding issue. A comfortable room equipped with their own dresser and bed.  Our residents are given time to get in touch with themselves, are offered life-changing encouragement through Christian-based programs and support to assist them in rebuilding their lives.  Residents needing more time will be allowed to stay longer. This will eliminate the need for them to be forced to live in undesirable conditions or situations while giving them time to heal, get back on their feet, and change the direction of their lives.

You may wonder what “4UL” means at the end of the name “On Eagles Wings 4UL.  It means “For You Lord”. We rest our faith and belief in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Our foundational Scripture is Isaiah 40:31

Yet those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.”
